Shopping is a thing that a lot of people do in their every day lives. I feel like every day involves some kind of transaction between a person and a commercial establishment. Grocery shopping is probably the most frequent kind of shopping we do in our lives. People have to eat.

Groceries take up a lot of our budgets. Sometimes the food you buy is good for an entire week, give or take a few days. And when you run out of food, you have to travel to the grocery store to buy more groceries. That’s a lot of money being used up.

A lot of people choose to buy non-perishable items in bulk, because sometimes you need something to snack. When you buy stuff like that, all you have to worry about is buying meats frequently. And people also love to use coupons. Coupons are great because you get certain items in bulk at slightly cheaper prices. People will find ways to save a little bit of money.

So it’s no surprise that a few companies have started what was once a physical thing, a coupon, and made it make sense in a digital world. There have been a few apps out there that give you a bit money just from purchasing groceries. And we’re about to review it.

What Is Checkout 51?

Checkout 51 is a website and app that gives you a cashback for buying certain items in at your local grocery store. They have a list of offers that updates every week. There are a lot of well-known brands included in those offers. Once you have reached at least $20 worth of cashback, you can cashout and receive a check in the mail.

How Cashback Works

Checkout 51 is currently available for people who live in the United States and Canada. The service is available on desktops, and devices that run on iOS and Android.

The process of signing up for the services is surprisingly easy. You can sign up using either your Facebook or Google account or even your e-mail. (Though if you’re using Gmail as your e-mail client, you should probably just sign up using your Google account. It seems less of a hassle than keeping track of your passwords.)

I wasn’t really able to try out the entire experience of the service because I do not live in North America. That’s one of the major downsides of a service like this. It’s only available in the United States (including a few territories) and Canada. So if you’re from any other place aside those two countries, you’re basically out of luck from trying this service.

I was able to look around the website to see what it has to offer. The website has an initial list of offers that you can check in case you’re still on the fence of signing up. Most of the offers they have are from name-brand products. So if you mostly choose store-brand products at your local grocery store, this is probably not the best service for you.

The cash back rebates differ from product to product. Some only give out $0.25 worth of rebates, while others are around $1–2. Depending on which items you often buy from the grocery, you probably wouldn’t take up some offers. And that’s fine.

In order to get cash back rebates from those offers, you have to manually select which items that the app should be looking out for in the receipt you’ll upload. Yes, you have to do that. Although the app does also allow you to link your favorite grocery store’s loyalty card if you have one to save time from uploading the receipt. You have to take a picture of the receipt using the app, and it has to be readable. You can probably lay out the receipt on a flat surface when you’re at home.

Is Checkout 51 Legit? Does It Pay?

It seems like Checkout 51 is a legitimate app. It is owned by a company that provides retail solutions for grocery stores. So it sort of made sense that they would have an app that partners with different grocery stores to provide rebates. I mean, this company also does coupons.

The service lets you cash out once you’ve reach the $20 threshold. Depending on how frequently you buy name-brand products, especially those that offer rebates, it might be easy to reach that threshold. It doesn’t seem like the rebates expire once the offers refresh.

The service also lets you take up multiple offers of the same product if it allows it. Some also allow you to use coupons in conjunction with the cash back offers. So there’s a lot of ways you can save money.

I guess the only problem really is if you don’t buy name-brand products that often. Even though these offers don’t really depend on which grocery store you buy from—though some offers are tied to specific retailers—you probably wouldn’t have much use for this app.

And the thing about that $20 cash out is that you can only get it through check or via PayPal. And the check will be delivered in two weeks or so. So there’s very limited ways to get those rebates.

Conclusion

I think this is a pretty decent app for what it’s worth. It just really depends if the kind of name-brand product that have rebate offers are something that you frequently buy. Nobody really wants to buy stuff they don’t really want to buy. (Is this naivete?)

And since this app is only available for people in America and Canada, they’re really the only ones I can recommend this to. Although there might be more localized cash back apps similar to Checkout 51. So if there is one, maybe check it out.
